The Society of Indiana Archivists is hosting its first unconference. An unconference is a meeting or conference with no predetermined topic. While they normally have a loose schedule, unconferences are discussion-driven by participants on the event day. Usually, there is a general theme on which participants can break out and base their small-group discussions, and participants share their notes and takeaways with the larger group at the end.

The Society of Indiana Archivists, in partnership with the IU Northwest Archives and Special Collections (Calumet Regional Archives) and the John W. Anderson Library at Indiana University Northwest, is hosting its Annual Meeting in Gary, Indiana, on Friday, April 19. The Annual Meeting will feature presentations about exciting and innovative projects from archivists, librarians, and professionals in the field, including building up new archival programs and collections, community partnerships, digitization and digital systems, primary-source instruction, and engaging with students. Join SIA members on Thursday for pre-Annual Meeting events, including a discussion-based “unconference” workshop, an architectural tour of Gary, and an evening networking event.

Plenary Speakers

Linda Jones, Gary Historical and Cultural Society, Inc.

Linda Jones is an educator, historian, genealogist, writer, and lecturer. She received her Genealogist Certification from IAP Career College, a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Calumet College. She has taught finance and accounting classes at Indiana Wesleyan University in Merrillville, Indiana, and GED classes at the Gary Community School Corporation in Gary, Indiana.

Linda is the current President/CEO of Gary Historical and Cultural Society, Inc., whose mission is to enrich the lives of Gary, IN citizens of all ages through programs that preserve and promote local history and culture.

Sam Love, Our Gary Stories

Samuel Love is a social and civic practice artist who organizes public projects that connect communities to their cultural and ecological histories through publishing, multi-media installations, and performance. In 1999, he graduated from the History Department at Indiana University Northwest and earned the Paul Urcan Award for excellence that year.

His work is often focused on the Calumet Region, exists in traditional and online forms, and is often collaborative. He has published The Gary Anthology for Belt Publishing, produced the award-winning documentary short Calumet: The Region's River, and is currently producing another documentary short about urban farming in Gary, Indiana.

Support for his work has come from the Indiana Arts Commission, Indiana Humanities, the Calumet Collaborative, the Center for Community Progress, the National Trust, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

  • Registration will close on Friday, April 5, 2024.
  • There will be no on-site registration the day of the Annual Meeting.
  • All times listed in the program are Central Daylight Time (CDT).
  • All payments are due prior to the start of the Annual Meeting.
  • Cancellations with refund must be made by emailing Julia Motyka at jmotyka@archindy.org before Thursday, April 18, 2024.
  • All registrants will receive an acknowledgement of their registration and a receipt for their payment.
  • Virtual attendees will receive links for the Annual Meeting via email the week of the Annual Meeting
  • Members: please log in to access member rates. If you are not currently a member, or your membership has lapsed, you must sign up for membership first in order to register with the member rate.

Parking & Travel

The Annual Meeting and Pre-Annual Meeting Workshop will be held at the John W. Anderson Library and Conference Center on the IU Northwest campus. The building is located on 35th Ave. between Broadway and Jefferson St. with the main entrance off of 35th Ave. Please see the Campus Map in the Annual Meeting the program.

Parking is available on the north side of the IU Northwest campus center off of W 33rd Ave. The parking lot is a 5-minute walk from the John W. Anderson Library. Parking will be free for the Pre-Annual Meeting Workshop and the Annual Meeting. Parking passes will be sent after registration or available at the registration table when attendees check in. Please see the Campus Map in the Annual Meeting program.

Scholarships

In 2024, two scholarships will be awarded for the Society of Indiana Archivists Annual Meeting, held on April 19, 2024. Both scholarships will receive a complimentary registration to the Annual Meeting and $200 to cover the expenses associated with attending. The two scholarships are the Thomas Krasean Student Scholarship and the John Newman Professional Development Scholarship.

Thomas Krasean Student Scholarship

Graduate students enrolled in a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program, Master of Arts (MA) in History or Museum Studies program, or a related graduate program, and new professionals (up to five years of post-graduate work experience) are encouraged to apply.

John Newman Memorial Professional Development Scholarship

Anyone in the field of special collections and archives in the state of Indiana is eligible to apply for this scholarship. New employees and volunteers are especially encouraged to apply as well as applicants with limited professional development opportunities available through their institution.

Application Information

Deadline: April 4, 2024 (2 weeks prior)

Submission: Submit a statement of interest stating why you want to attend the annual meeting and how it will benefit you. Include in your statement a brief outline of your archival education and any work history, along with a description of your long-term professional goals. Please include your contact information (name, mailing address, phone, and e-mail) as well as contact information for your institution or employer. Statements should be no more than 200-400 words.

Please submit the information stated above via email to Sara Stefani at samastef@indiana.edu. The award recipients will be shared with all applicants via email and announced through the SIA listserv prior to the meeting. Upon accepting the award, the recipient must submit a headshot along with a reflection of the annual meeting for SIA publication.

Tour & Dinner

Architectural Tour of Gary

No onsite registration available.

$25.00 per person

The tour is organized through the George Maher Society. The organization commemorates the life and work of George Washington Maher, a turn-of-the-twentieth-century architect inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and the Prairie School-style. The two-hour experience will be conducted on a bus and attendees will be able to walk around select historical buildings and neighborhoods as part of the tour.

The cost helps compensate the generosity of the George Maher Society for organizing the tour and the bus company for transportation.

There are 50 spots available. Please reserve your spot and pay when registering for the Annual Meeting. Please meet at J's Breakfast Club, a locally-owned restaurant. The bus will leave from J's Breakfast Club. Parking is available for free at the restaurant.
