Collecting Current and Difficult Histories

with Karen DePauw and Tamara Hemmerlein

Partnering with the Indiana Historical Society, SIA is offering two sessions in a half day workshop. The workshop will talk about the ways to collect contemporary history and work with difficult subject matters in collections.

Session 1: Collecting Current History with Karen DePauw

Many collecting institutions focus on the "past" but find it more difficult to collect the present. This webinar presents ways to increase collecting of current topics and deal with some of the specific issues that can raise.

Session 2: Difficult History with Tamara Hemmerlein

One of the most important roles of history organizations is to thoughtfully and intentionally interpret history, even when that history is hard. In this training, we’ll talk about “difficult” history by identifying what it is and various approaches to telling difficult stories. We’ll discuss some ways to help people move beyond the barriers to learning those stories.
