Registration

This year's 2026 SIA Pre-Annual Meeting Workshop will be a half-day hands-on workshop about film identification and preservation. The IU Libraries Moving Image Archive (IULMIA) will be presenting a lecture on film identification and best practices for preservation followed by a camera-less filmmaking session where attendees will draw, scratch, and otherwise manipulate film that will then be spliced together and presented at the start of the afternoon tour later that day.

The afternoon tour and information session will be followed by a 45-minute screening of Midwestern home movies (1964–2018) from IULMIA’s collection. The tour can be attended without attending the workshop.

About the Speakers

The Indiana University Libraries Moving Image Archive (IULMIA) centers human connection in the preservation and active use of more than 130,000 moving image works spanning nearly a century, including socially and culturally driven media and educational films created for learning, documentation, and public engagement.

Maddye Webb-Mitchell (she/her) is a Media Archivist specializing in small gauge film at IU Libraries Moving Image Archive. She devotes as much time as possible to teaching students about archival work and moving image preservation, preserving home movies, and documenting the institutional history of the IU Audio-Visual Center. Jamie Thomas (she/her) is the Head Projectionist and Screening Room Coordinator at the IU Libraries Moving Image Archive, where she oversees film presentations and supports access to archival moving image collections. She has been projecting film since 1999, bringing more than two decades of hands-on experience in exhibition and archival practice to her work. Jamie is a graduate of Penn State University and earned a certificate in film preservation from the Jeffrey L. Selznick School of Film Preservation. Her background combines technical expertise with a deep commitment to preserving and presenting moving image history for researchers, students, and the broader community.

Caleb Allison (he/him) is a scholar-practitioner and moving image archivist who has taught cinema and media studies and production for nearly a decade at Indiana University and Butler University. As a filmmaker, he specializes in small gauge formats and experimental techniques, while his scholarly interests consider the history and aesthetics of film restoration and preservation as it emerged and intersected with home video cultures beginning in the 1980s. Most recently, these passions led to the founding of Sprocket & Reel, a small business whose mission it is to help share the joys of celluloid filmmaking with diverse communities and promote 16mm as an accessible format through engaging 2-day workshops.

Plenary Speaker

Friday, April 17, 2026 | 11:00 a.m. - 11:50 a.m. (EST)

Heather K. Calloway, EdD, Executive Director of University Collections, Indiana University

Care Beyond the Collections: Archivists and Wellness in Uncertain Times

In a year marked by uncertainty, staffing cuts, and shifting institutional priorities, archivists and special collections professionals have faced increasing pressure to preserve records and collections while navigating burnout, grief, and instability within their institutions. Archivists are trained to plan for long-term care and access, yet are often asked to lead through change, make difficult decisions, and sustain essential work with fewer resources.

Drawing on her lived experience as an archivist providing leadership during periods of institutional restructuring, reduced staffing, and expanding responsibilities, this keynote examines how archival labor is shaped by emotional responsibility, ethical accountability and care work that often goes unrecognized. From stewarding collections and donor relationships to mentoring students and supporting colleagues, archival leadership today frequently occurs under conditions of constraint.

Grounded in current research and examples from archival work across Indiana and beyond, Calloway will offer practical strategies for sustaining ourselves and our colleagues and for reframing care as an ethical responsibility within archival practice. The keynote centers on building professional cultures that value transparency and mutual support. It acknowledges current challenges while affirming that archivists and cultural heritage workers deserve stable, supported careers.
