About the Workshop

Digital POWRR Workshop for Digital Preservation continues the POWRR mission of empowering librarians and archivists to build skills for curating and preserving digital collections. This pre-annual meeting workshop will be small, in-person training that will incorporate an overview of digital preservation and will conclude with personalized and actionable digital preservation plan for each participant.

Digital Preservation refers to the series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as necessary. Digital preservation is defined very broadly for the purposes of this study and refers to all the actions required to maintain access to digital materials beyond the limits of media failure or technological and organizational change.

PLEASE NOTE: While digitizing can be a preservation method, it is inherently different from digital preservation activities. This workshop will not include training on digitization processes or technology. Also out of scope are discussions on creating digital collections and using content management systems (ie PastPerfect).

Intro to POWRR Plans, Resource Review, and Closing

    Sessions Overview:

Digital Preservation 101: This session will provide a broad introduction to digital preservation concepts and strategies that follow a "good enough" approach to starting digital preservation.

Assessment for Digital Preservation: Assessment frameworks and tools can help organizations understand all the factors that go into collecting and maintaining digital collections. In this session, we will do a deep dive into two frameworks that are focused on digital preservation - the NDSA Levels of Preservation and the DPC-RAM- and learn how we can tie the results into local goal setting and implementation.

Digital Preservation Policies: A digital preservation (DP) policy fits within the ecosystem of instruments used to define, create/select, describe, maintain, and preserve digital collections. The components that make up a DP policy and sample DP policies will be reviewed. Participants will work in small groups to evaluate real-life policy components and templates that can be used for creating/updating DP policies.

Storage 101: Many cultural heritage organizations have found storage to be a barrier to digitization and digital preservation projects. Thinking through amount, type, and cost requirements is difficult, and some storage options come with hidden "gotcha" costs. This module walks through viable options for short-term backup and long-term storage.

Walk the Workflow: A demonstration of an end-to-end digital preservation workflow using simple, open-source tools followed by time for hands-on engagement with the workflow.
